The Benefits of Bed Time Yoga

Bed Time is a great time for any child (or adult!) to practice yoga.

Yoga Asana (poses) activates the parasympathetic nervous system (think rest and digest) which literally helps prepare the body for resting, so kids are ready to go to sleep, and stay asleep for the right length of time.

Bed Time yoga also helps establish a routine, which as every parent knows; is crucial to helping your child develop healthy sleep habits.

Regular yoga before bed has also been shown to reduce insomnia and sleep problems repeatedly in studies.

This is why the Ready To Sleep Series is in four parts, for you to keep and revisit as may times as you like.

How Much Sleep Does Your Child Need?

The National Sleep Foundation shares the below sleep requirements for children.

Whilst I do believe that every child is different it is helpful to have a guide on how much sleep the average child your age requires.

Age – Daily Sleep Requirement

  • Toddlers (1 – 2 years) 11 – 14 hours

  • Pre-schoolers (3 – 5 years) 10 – 13 hours

  • School-aged children (6 – 10 years) 9 – 11 hours

  • Teenagers (14 – 17 years) 8 – 10 hours
